This brilliant story tells of a time when man stands upon the moon and the planets, tells of men now divided by the vast stretches of the Solar System but once again torn by jealousy and fear. What is a planet but an island floating in space, after all? You all are familiar with the concept even if you don’t know where it comes from.

At the beginning, a great deal of time is spent explaining how quiet, quaint and utterly uneventful life is in Midwich. Mind you, it seems to also be the case of a fear of the unknown. It’s true that Wyndham’s preference is for no-nonsense, brisk, wry narrators, and the horrors that visit the books can seem like opportunities to show off good old British pluck.

After a f I read The Day of the Triffids last year and thoroughly enjoyed it – I wouldn’t say I enjoyed this one quite as much but it was definitely worth the read. Cukoos a few hours of chaos and media-intrigue the residents of the midwifh begin to wake up – seemingly unharmed.
