The two other books – a collection of shorts in the universe and “The Magic of the Deryni” are wonderful additions to the main storyline. Yes, there are some weaknesses. It was a heartfelt gift as the books were the ones I read while I was on bed rest waiting his arrival. The world and magic aren’t adequately explained; the characters feel like explorations more than fully-rounded people; there are a total of two major female characters, one of whom is evil while the other is hysterical; chapter-ending cliffhangers are resolved a page later with absolutely no justification for the initial tension; and the prose is riddled with unnecessary speech tags and adverbs some of them extra-questionable.

In the end I wasn’t convinced that the good guys and bad guys were all that different from each other, despite the narrative’s insistence that they were. As for if I liked it, it is part of the charm of the book for me.

Not comparable with modern fantasy but enjoyable enough. First of all, the writing is not particularly vivid in this first novel I flipped through a later book and noticed that the writing was much more polished, as would be expected. But it does stick out when you use four adverbs in two sentences, most of them pointless since you’ve already described the character’s expression and body language, or put an exclamation mark at the end irsing a vehement statement, or whatnot.

Then there was Deryni Rising. Because there’s only one other female character in the book–Jehanna, who basically exists to annoy Kelson and Morgan and, by extension, the reader.
