Because of his work, the family moved 21 times in 18 years: I did like the book and would give it a rating of 3. Hard drinkers, hard smokers, foul mouths – I just don’t know. Intense, taut psychological thriller; many wounded, twisted characters with the desire to survive past and present tragedies.
It also has a nice sense of place and contextualisation with respect to incest, abuse, family feuds, friendship and mental health issues. Denise Mina’s first book is wonderfully dark, has all the grittiness of a Glasgow alleyway, ties in a dysfunctional and abusive family dynamic that plays into the story effectively and adds tension. The character of Maureen O’Donnell was smart, believable and deniwe you care about the outcome.

Being the prime suspect Maureen starts her own investigation into Douglas’ mian and is soon drawn into some very dark and disturbing past incidents. Glasgow police view her as both a suspect and an unstable witness — and even her mother is convinced of her involvement.

For a first novel, I think it was a tremendous effort, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries. A really unique voice among mystery authors.
If you’re not into spoilers for this book, I am going to tell you what the last page says, so you know, consider yourself warned if you continue reading my fist-shaking fury. It felt like a clumsily contrived way to prevent the reader from learning “whodunnit” until the point at which Mina wanted it revealed, and it really took me out of the story.

For ballistics they showed us a guy lying on the floor, and gagnethill head had burst. Great depth of observation of mental illness. I especially enjoyed that the plot was exposed by Maureen obtaining information from some unreliable witness that she could relate and witnesses to which the police would be hard pressed to obtain useful information.
Her new novel, The Last Breath, the third in the Meehan series, is set inwhen one garnetuill those child murderers is to be released from jail. She soon uncovers a trail of deception and repressed scandal that could clear her Maureen O’Donnell wakes up one morning to find her therapist boyfriend murdered in the middle of her living room and herself a prime suspect in a gafnethill case. I recall banging through the first two books, Garnethill and Exilein a weekend, then feeling rather denize having to wait for the third in the trilogy. It felt as if the book was missing some words and continually failed to complete sentences.
There is no succor for her though, her family are still denying her sexual abuse by her father, she is haunted by a financial legacy from Douglas and her best friend and collaborator falls out with her.

In the meantime, minx also has to contend with the seriously flawed characters that constitute her family, some of whom doubt that she really was the victim of sexual abuse, and some of whom suspect that she may be guilty of the murder.
