Badiou is thus able to theorize using category theory the phenomenal structure within appearance of what are also already according to Being and Event thinkable using set theory as sets or multiplicities within being itself. The Neolithic, Capitalism, and Communism.

When talking about one of the most important ISAs, that of education, he talks about how teachers, committed to the idea of class struggle, can influence and divert the educational ideology away from reinforcing that of the state ideology, he calls this a sign: Instead, Badiou’s relationships of structuration of appearance are explicitly objectivedetermining without exception what can be understood to “exist” in a particular world, and what remains “inexistent” or invisible within its own particular way of structuring its phenomena pp.
Another fruitful approach would be to read the concept of world in the history of philosophy and social theory, along with the evolution in the world of social relations linking it to a Marxist problematic.
Unions are problematic when their overall attitude is to think that their negotiations are either sufficient to deal with such exploitation within the current political framework reformistor sufficient to overcome the current political framework and produce a revolutionary seizure of power. Long, tedious, unnecessarily complex, and not particularly convincing. What is not discussed is the possibility of transforming an atonic world into a tensed world, or simply changing the relation between the transcendental world of appearance and its ontological base.

Jul 23, J. There is no one conception that rules loics in the same way that there is a singular conception that may rule Lacan or Descartes. Challenging but not obscure, eclectic but not digressive, Logics of Worlds is one of Badiou’s most substantial and original books to date.
What is perhaps wonderful about Badiou’s approach, as well, is that he sidesteps the traditional jargon that Zizek has to deal with. Nevermind the fact that such methodology did not exist for all time, and that the formalism of our own knowledge is a fragmentary creation of the conditions of what we accept to be knowledge.
In particular the power set of a set, which is the set baciou all subsets.
Math follows the inductive “analytical” side of the method. Both in Badiou’s magnum opus, Being and Event and its new sequel, Logics of Worldsthe result is a bzdiou of paradoxical formalism of the limits of formalism itself, striking a sometimes uneasy balance between the inveterate tendency of analytic thought to seek formal solutions for theoretical problems of wor,ds and metaphysics, and that of continental thought to seek the solution to what are seen as more-than-theoretical problems of social and political praxis in the kinds of liberation that may occur outside the “closed” regime of all that is calculable or tractable by formal systems.
A fascinating book, well worth reading for understanding the trajectory of perhaps the most exciting thinker working today.
Materi a Work of monstrous import. Ov math can be used analytically, and often is, its incompleteness in its axioms results from the fact that as a methodological field, math is stitched together through a variety of methods connected by sheer formalism.
The radical recasting of ontology in Being and Event is followed and complemented here by a thoroughgoing transformation in our very understanding of logicconceived as a theory not of being but of appearing.
Badiou does use language that can sometimes be pretty dense. The reason why I want to draw out this comparison is that although Badiou makes it clear that the relation between a world and its ontological ground is important, with wprlds theory of points, he says little about how this relation could be changed.

Unafraid to resurrect and reinvent the classical themes of philosophy, Badiou gives new meaning to concepts such as object, body and relation, mobilising them in arresting studies that range from the architectural planning of Brasilia to contemporary astronomy, and confronting himself with towering philosophical counterparts Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Lacan, Deleuze.
Two additional weaknesses to Badiou 1. He’s quite inspiring, too. And sometimes I tend to sympathize with my colleagues who focus on analytic philosophy and their complaint though it’s not always fair that most continental philosophy is just psychobabble designed to seem profound and trick people into lauding it as Sometimes you have to wonder about someone’s philosophy when the majority logicw their rabid fans outside of philosophy, but in other academic departments or nothold them up as brilliant but can only explain what they mean in other obscurantisms.
The book culminates in an impassioned call to ‘live for an Idea’.
It’s going to be a long journey, but worth it. Chris Satoor rated it it was amazing May 31, Using this category-theoretical framework, Badiou can thus define the underlying structures determining the “logic” or relations of appearance determining what is treated as existent in each world, including various degrees of existence correspondent to the degrees of truth allowed by the world’s specific categorical architecture.
This strange retroactive effect of appearing on being is possible, as in Being and Eventonly through a paradoxical effect of self-reference or -belonging; for an event to occur, it is necessary not only that a certain set a multiple in being be a member of itself, but also that this particular being appear, in a world, as an element of a transcendental indexing that again indexes that very being pp.
Badiou proposes to replace this axiomatic of contemporary conviction with one that he calls, following Althusser, a “materialist dialectic”. Keith rated it really liked it Mar 07, By grasping the concepts, we can then also understand that mathematics is philosophical in its nature, although it is of a different kind. Responding to the problems raised in postmodern French thought, Alain Badiou’s book offers an original rational scenario of interpreting them in a new key.

Likewise, Marx explains exchange value through the various different use values of products: An atonic world is only capable of modification, whereas a tensed world can sustain the radical change of an event, with the other two forms of change falling between these extremes.

Please log in using one of these methods to post your comment: The various different situations provide little input as to the method of the formalization, although the success of the formalization requires a method of atomization — “chunking”. This misses the point as both he and Deleuze understand that negation is not a rebuke of a logic but rather the emphasis of a missing totality.
